Seven-seater Volkswagen Tiguan in works; launch in 2016-17

Volkswagen Tiguan SUV

It has been a while since Volkswagen is testing its next-generation Volkswagen Tiguan SUV which is likely to go on sale by early 2016. The second generation Volkswagen Tiguan will be unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September, and is likely to come India as well. Currently, the Tiguan SUV is offered in five-seat version; however, a seven-seater model is also in making.

The new generation Volkswagen Tiguan will be based on the flexible MQB platform that also underpins the new Golf and the Passat saloon. This flexible platform will allow the company to create two different wheelbase sizes- a smaller for 5-seat SUV and a larger wheelbase version for seven-seater. The larger wheelbase model will sport third row seats to offer space for 2 adults. If media reports are to be believed, the seven-seater version will be showcased to public at the 2016 Detroit Motor Show.

This seven-seater SUV will be made available in select countries including China and India. It is likely to share its component levels and styling cues with SEAT’s first SUV and the Yeti replacement. Like Skoda Yeti, the next-gene Tiguan will be offered in two versions- one for City driving and one for adventures.

It is speculated that the Volkswagen Tiguan SUV will be made available with a range of 4-cylinder engines. The petrol version of the SUV will get 1.4-litre TSI engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission gearbox, which is capable of developing 130PS. The oil burner is expected to get 2.0-litre TDI motor that offers two states of tune- 140PS and 170PS, and this engine will be paired to a six-speed DSG gearbox. There will be a 1.6-litre TDI engine with 110PS as well.
