Renault Kiger Compact SUV to Rival Vitara Brezza; Debut in February

Renault HBC Launch

Buoyed by positive response for Triber, Renault is now readying an all-new sub-4 meter SUV for the Indian market. Codenamed HBC, the new subcompact SUV is scheduled to be launched in the second half of 2020. A new media report claims that the upcoming Renault compact SUV will be christened as the Kiger.

The French automaker has trademarked the name Kiger in India. The Kiger refers to a type of horse found in the US. The new model is scheduled to make global debut at the 2020 Auto Expo, while launch is expected during festive season. The new sub-4 meter SUV will be based on the CMF-A modular platform that also underpins the Triber and the Kwid. The new SUV is expected to be the most affordable in its category.

The Renault Kiger will take on the likes of the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue and others in the sub-4 meter SUV category. It is expected to share some of the design highlights with the Triber and the Duster. The SUV is likely to get Renault’s triple-layered grille with logo in the middle, projector headlamps with LED DRLs, faux-skid plate, sculpted bonnet, black plastic cladding and strong creases on the side.

The cabin is likely to share interior layout and most of the features with the Triber. It will be powered by a 1.0-litre petrol engine that also powers the Triber. While powering the Triber, this engine produces 71bhp and 96Nm of torque. However, the Kiger will receive the turbocharged version of the engine with higher power and torque value. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and an AMT gearbox.

The Renault Kiger will be the most affordable SUV in its category. It is expected to be priced as low as Rs 6 lakh, while the top-end model could be priced around Rs 8 lakh. The new SUV will be compliant with new safety and crash test norms. All the mandatory safety features will come as standard.
