November 3, 2016 – Volkswagen Polo GTI performance hatchback has finally arrived in the Indian market. Priced at Rs 25.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), this performance hatch is being imported to India via CBU (completely built-up unit) route. One must note that only 99 units of the VW Polo GTI will be sold through select VW dealerships. As a reminder, the Volkswagen Polo GTI had its India debut at this year’s Auto Expo.
While the Polo is already available with GT TSI and GT TDI options, the 3-door VW Polo GTI is Volkswagen’s first performance-oriented model in India. In the hot-hatch segment, the new Volkswagen Polo GTI will face a close competition from the Fiat Abarth Punto and BMW Mini.
The performance-oriented Polo GTI looks a lot more appealing and sportier than the regular model. Upfront, the car gets a new honeycomb grille and front air intake, GTI badges, sportier front and rear bumpers, red radiator grille strips, LED daytime running lights with automatic range adjustment, static cornering function for foglights and headlight washers. The car rides on 16-inch alloy wheels fitted with ‘Salvador’ R16 tyres. Other design highlights include roof spoilers, a black grained diffuser, dark red tail light clusters and chrome dual exhaust pipes. The front and rear ground clearance of the Polo GTI has been lowered by 10mm and 15mm respectively.
The interior of this hot-hatch is as sporty and premium as its exterior. Features like leather-wrapped flat-bottomed steering wheel, aluminum pedals, contrast red stitching, ‘Jacara’ seat upholstery, stainless steel door sill protectors with ‘GTI’ logo and ‘Black’ gloss interior trim details and black rooflining add more to its sporty appeal. There are decorative inserts on the centre console and dashboard. The car also offers a select suspension system with two adjustment settings – Comfort and Sport.
At the heart of the new VW Polo GTI is a new 1.8-litre TSI engine that is capable of pushing out 189bhp of power between 4,200rpm – 6,200rpm and 250Nm of torque at 1,450rpm – 4,200rpm. This makes it 11.8bhp more powerful and 70Nm torqueier than the current 1.4-litre TSI power unit. This petrol motor, with a 7-speed DSG gearbox, returns a claimed a mileage around 8.85kml. This hot hatch can achieve 100kmph from stand still in 6.7 second. The VW Polo GTI offers a top speed of 236kmph, thus making it fastest hot hatch in the country.
