Peugeot 2008 Compact SUV Is India Bound – Report

Likely to be launched in 2020, the Peugeot 2008 will rival the Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster.

Earlier this year, Groupe PSA, the French automaker has announced that it will enter into the Indian market by 2020. The company will assemble and develop its cars for Indian market at Chennai’s facility, which is currently been used to assemble Mitsubishi SUVs. Adding to it, PSA has also owned the Ambassador brand name. If media reports are to be believed, the French maker will launch four new cars – 208 and 308 hatchbacks, 2008 and 3008 SUVs in the Indian market. The Peugeot 2008 SUV will rival against the Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster, while the 3008 will be positioned against the Hyundai Tucson and Jeep Compass.

The current version of the 2008 SUV was unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Design elements like grille, sharp headlamps and sculpted bonnet seems inspired from the Peugeot 208 hatchback, which will also go on sale in the Indian market. Other design highlights include stepped roofline, 17-inch alloy wheels, bulging wheelarches and black bumpers. The range-topping model is equipped with full-length panoramic roof. The SUV will be offered in both petrol and diesel guise. While the petrol version will get a 1.2-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the oil burner is likely to be a 1.6-litre BlueHDi unit. Transmission options are likely to include a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic unit.

The company is yet to make an official announcement on the same, but media reports suggest that the 2008 SUV will go on sale in the country in 2020. The company could showcase this car at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo in February.

The gasoline version is capable of producing 109bhp of maximum power and 205Nm of torque. A five-speed manual gearbox driving the power to the front wheels will come as standard, while a six-speed automatic unit could be offered as an optional. On the other hand, the oil burner churns out 120bhp of power and 300Nm of torque. Power will be transmitted to the front wheels via a 6-speed gearbox.

This compact crossover shares most of its styling cues from the smaller sibling – Peugeot 208 – that will also come to India. First launched in 2013, the compact SUV sits above 4 meter in length. At the 2016 Paris Motor Show, the French automaker had unveiled the updated version of the Peugeot 2008 compact SUV. Design elements like chromed grille, sculpted-sharp headlamps and sculpted bonnet seems identical to the Peugeot 208. It features stepped roofline, roof rails, large 17-inch wheels, and muscular wheelarches and raised ride height that gives it a more rugged look. Other features include black bumpers, black plastic cladding, tall windows and full-length panoramic roof.

The cabin of the SUV is equipped with the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, MirrorLink and Satellite Navigation. Other features include climate control, multi-functional steering wheel, leather upholstery, LED instrument console, etc.
