Over 700 Maruti Suzuki Gypsy Delivered To the Indian Army

Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, the iconic two-door off-roader from the Indo-Japanese carmaker, was discontinued in India last year. The model was phased out owning to its inability to comply new safety norms and emission standards. Though, it seems that the SUV still charms the Indian army for its off-road capabilities, ruggedness and reliability. According to a fresh media report, the carmaker delivered 718 units of the BS4 Maruti Gypsy 4X4 to the Indian Army in June, 2020. Read – Over 1.34 Lakh Maruti WagonR, Baleno Recalled In India

The delivered units of the Gypsy are packed with a BS4-compliant 1.3L, 4-cylinder petrol engine returning a claimed power of 80bhp and 103Nm of torque. The off-road SUV has 4WD (four-wheel-drive) system with a low ratio and a 5-speed manual gearbox. As mentioned above, the Gypsy doesn’t meet the updated crash test norms and emission regulations. It misses out on some important safety features such as airbags, seat belt reminders and parking sensors, ABS (anti-lock braking system).

In India, the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy (badged as Suzuki Jimny overseas) was introduced 33 years ago in its second generation. Ever since, it was sold in the same avatar. Globally, the off-road SUV entered in its third generation in 1998 and in fourth generation in 2019. The fourth-generation Suzuki Jimny (three-door version) was showcased at this year’s Delhi Auto Expo.

Earlier, it was reported that the company is planning five-door version of the SUV for the Indian market. Though, the latest reports suggest that the new Jimny India launch is yet to be finalized. Even if India is on launch radar, the Maruti Jimny is expected to be priced between Rs 8 lakh – Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).

By the end of this month, the Indo-Japanese carmaker will bring in the 2020 Maruti Suzuki S-Cross petrol. The model will share its engine with the new Vitara Brezza and come with manual and automatic gearbox options. Prices of the S-Cross petrol will be slightly less than its BS4 diesel version.
