Only 36,697 Cars Sold In May 2020 – Carmaker Wise Tally

May 2020 wasn’t necessarily a great month considering the Corona fear among buyers, but we saw some positive momentum. With the partial lift of the lockdown, most carmakers have resumed operations at their select production plants with limited human resources and reopened most of their dealerships. Last month, only 36,697 units of the four-wheelers have been sold in the country. India’s largest passenger carmaker, Maruti Suzuki registered a total sales of 13,700 units accounting 88.7% decline compared to the same period last year. The company’s cumulative sales figure stood at 18,539 units including 4,651 units for export markets and 23 units to other OEMs.

With a total sales of 12,583 units, Hyundai Motor India witnessed sales declined by 78.7%. The South Korean carmaker managed to sell 6,883 units in the domestic market and exported 5,700 units. The new-generation Creta wasn’t only the major sales contributor for Hyundai, but it was also the top selling car of the month. The carmaker dispatched 3,212 units of the new Creta to customers.

Mahindra & Mahindra managed to sell 3,867 units as opposed to 20,608 units of the same month previous year, registering a decline of 81.24%. Tata Motors and Renault were the fourth and fifth top selling carmakers with sales figures of 3,153 units and 1,753 units respectively. The new entrants – Kia Motors and MG Motor – managed to sell 1,661 units and 710 units respectively.

Toyota Kirloskar Motors retailed 1,641 units as opposed to 12,138 units of the same month last year. The company suffered a loss of 86.48% compared to the last year. Volkswagen and Skoda garnered 1404 units and 508 units respectively and faced decline of 47.71% and 55.75% against the previous year. While the Ford Motor India sold 571 units, Nissan and Honda Cars Indian managed to retail 378 units and 375 units respectively. The American SUV maker registered total sales of 93 units against 991 units of the same month previous year, recording sales decline of 84.65%.
