The Rajasthan High Court has ordered the state transport authorities to cancel or withdraw driving licenses issued to illiterate people. The court has passed the order while hearing a petition filed by a person who wanted a transport vehicle license. The petitioner was a light motor vehicle license holder for 13 years before he applied for the transport license. The bench of Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma, issued the license cancellation of illiterate drivers and termed them as a “menace for the pedestrians”. His official statement reads “The license cannot be allowed to be issued for driving any kind of vehicle to an illiterate person as he is virtually a menace for the pedestrians as he would not be in a position to understand road signs and notices of caution written on boards for human safety on the highways as well as on the roads in the cities.

The license of Light Motor Vehicles issued to the petitioner and similar persons also must be therefore withdrawn in the light of what has been stated herein above.“ Read – Chery in talks with Tata Motors to enter India

The court says that the Motor Vehicle Rules should also consider the ‘public who are using the roads’, while benefiting the license holders. The court is of the opinion that illiterate people are virtually a menace for the pedestrians as they are unable to read cautions and human safety rules written on the highways or cities and understand road signs.

The concerned authorities have been ordered to submit a report to the High Court within a month. The next hearing of the case has been scheduled for July 5, 2019.
