Homegrown UV maker, Mahindra is working on a range of new cars for the Indian market. The company will launch the U321 MPV, a 7-seater premium SUV and a sub-4 meter SUV – codenamed S201 in 2018. Adding to it, Mahindra is developing a next-generation version of the Thar SUV. The new model will be based on an all-new platform and it will also be marginally longer than the current model. The next model is expected to meet the upcoming crash test norms. If reports are to be believed, the new model will be marginally longer than the current SUV. The Thar is one of the most popular off-roaders currently on sale in India. Not just as a lifestyle vehicle, it has also attracted adventure lovers. The report also suggests that Mahindra is planning to make the next Thar a ‘cult’ brand. The next Thar is expected to be more refined and more capable on the highway. The new Thar is expected to be launched in the second half of 2019, around 6 to 12 months before the April 2020 deadline to regularise the crash test norms in India. The outgoing model is based on the Jeep CJ5 from 1960’s and was launched in 2010. Mahindra Thar first received a makeover in 2015, which came with updated cabin and a detachable soft-top along with new bumpers and wheel-arch claddings.
