The next-generation Maruti Alto is likely to be powered by a more powerful, smaller capacity petrol engine

It seems like Maruti is gearing up to revive the once popular entry-level car segment of Indian car market. Coming 2019, the Indo-Japanese brand will launch an all-new entry-level compact SUV based on the Future S concept. Adding to it, the company will introduce the new-generation Wagon R before the end of this financial year. What’s more interesting is that Maruti is also working on an all-new entry-level car. Codenamed Maruti Y1K, the small car will be slotted between the Alto and the WagonR.

The new small car will be ready by 2020 and if media report is to be believed, the vehicle has been conceptualised at the carmaker’s Rohtak based R&D centre. This doesn’t mean that Maruti Alto will be phased out. In fact, the company is working on an all-new Alto hatchback. The report claims that the new model will be launched in India in 2021. The new model will come with better structural integrity and safety features, which will make it compliant to stringent crash test norms. Adding to it, Maruti is also likely to tweak its smaller capacity engines to meet the upcoming BSVI emission norms. The new Maruti Alto could also use the company’s new HEARTECT platform, which is a lighter and safer architecture.

We believe that the new Maruti Alto could come with all-new design, which will be influenced by Maruti’s Concept Future S. The new model is likely to have crossover-ish profile, which is currently the most preferred among Indians. Previous media reports claim that the next-generation Alto could receive an all-new 660cc petrol engine. This engine is said to be more powerful than the current 800cc engine.
