Next-gen Fiat Punto Imagined: A Peugeot 208 based Hatchback

The globally popular Fiat Punto nameplate was discontinued in 2018. However, Fiat officials have confirmed that the Punto nameplate will return. This clearly indicates that the comeback of the hatchback was inspired by the recent merger of the Fiat Chrysler Automobile and the French Groupe PSA.

According to the global press, the next-gen Fiat Punto could be introduced around 2022. It is likely to be based on the Groupe PSA’s CMP (Common Modular Platform), which also underpins the Peugeot 208. The new merger will further help Fiat to fast pace the development around its future products. Adding to it, the new CMP platform will allow Fiat to introduce electric vehicles as this architecture already underpins the e-208, Corsa-e and Citroen e-C4.

Peugeot 208 GT Line

Auto-Moto website has released a couple of renderings, which gives an idea of how Fiat’s next-gen Punto could look like. The new model is expected to be launched in the European markets. Interestingly, this could lead the development of the Opel Corsa.

The next-gen Fiat Punto is expected to measure slightly over 4 meters in length. It is likely to feature a wheelbase of around 2.54 meters. Before introducing the next Punto, FCA will launch the Tipo based compact SUV in the European markets. The next-gen Punto will directly rival the likes of the Volkswagen Polo, Peugeot 208 and the Ford Fiesta. The hatchback is likely to feature 136bhp electric motor and 50kWh lithium batteries. The regular model could receive the 1.2L turbocharged petrol engine.

The next-gen Fiat Punto won’t be launched in our market. FCA is only selling the Jeep brand in our market. However, the CMP platform will adopt multiple new cars from Groupe PSA’s Citroen brand in India. First model based on this platform is likely to be an all-new compact SUV, which is rumoured to be called Citroen C3 Sporty. Codenamed C21, the compact SUV is expected to be launched in the second half of 2021. This platform will also underpin an all-new sedan and a compact hatchback.
