New Volkswagen Polo Sedan Unveiled in Russia

2020 VW Polo Sedan

We reported earlier that Volkswagen will launch 2 all-new products based on the locally developed MQB AO IN platform. The company will launch the Taigun mid-sized SUV and an all-new sedan (Vento replacement). The new sedan is expected to share the styling cues from the Virtus sedan sold abroad. Volkswagen has now revealed the new Polo sedan in the Russian market. The India-spec model could be inspired by the Russian-spec Polo sedan.

What’s interesting is that the new VW Polo sedan looks completely different from the Virtus. In fact, it is basically a re-badged Skoda Rapid sedan. Instead of the sedan-like rear, the Polo sedan gets liftback type boot. The trunk lid opens together with the rear window, similar to the hatchbacks.

The company hasn’t released the dimensions of the Polo sedan, but it is expected to be similar to that of the Rapid. The new Rapid is 4.48 meters in length and has a wheelbase of 2.60 meters. It comes with a boot space of 550-litres. The Virtus sedan has the same 4.48 meters in length, but has a longer wheelbase of 2.65 meters and smaller boot of 521-litres.

Inside the cabin, the new Volkswagen mid-sized sedan gets Golf 8 inspired steering wheel, a floating multimedia center, digital air conditioning, and a 10.25-inch digital instrument console. It gets front and rear parking sensors, light and rain sensors, and reverse camera. Some of the design highlights include LED Headlamps, 16-inch alloys, chromed front grille, and chrome treatment for the rear diffuser and the base of the side window.

The new VW Polo sedan shares the engines and transmissions with the Skoda Rapid – a 1.6-litre aspirated petrol that offers two states of tunes – 90bhp and 110bhp, and a 1.4-litre TSI petrol with 125bhp. Transmission choices will include a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed automatic and a 7-speed DSG.
