It is no secret that Toyota is working on a wide range of SUVs including an all-new Corolla Cross. A new media report claims that Toyota is also readying an all-new mid-sized SUV, codenamed ‘Local Boy’. This mid-sized SUV will directly rival the popular Jeep Compass SUV.

The new mid-sized SUV will be positioned between the C-HR and the RAV4. The Toyota RAV4 in its new generation is significantly bigger and is now positioned against the likes of the Volkswagen Tiguan, Honda CR-V and the Citroen C5 Aircross. It is based on the TNGA platform, which also underpins the Toyota Camry sedan.

It was speculated Toyota will introduce an all-new SUV based on the Tj Cruiser concept, which was showcased at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. However, the report claims that the Toyota Tj Cruiser based SUV won’t go on sale anytime soon. In fact, the new SUV will be on Toyota’s priority and will be introduced in 2022. The new SUV will have boxy design with straight lines and traditional SUV characteristics.

The upcoming SUV will be more practical and versatile than the funky Toyota C-HR crossover. The Tj Cruiser had sliding doors, while the new mid-sized SUV will have hinged doors at the front and rear. The SUV is likely to share some of the design cues from the RAV4 Crossover. The report claims that the new SUV will measure around 4,410mm in length, 1,815mm in width and 1,600mm in height. It is likely to be powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine with manual and automatic gearbox options.

We reported earlier that Toyota and Suzuki are also developing a new mid-sized SUV to rival the likes of the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta. The new model will be based on the Toyota’s low-cost DNGA platform that also underpins the Raize and the Daihatsu Rocky. It is reported that Toyota is planning to bring this platform in India to develop new mid-sized SUVs.
