New Toyota D22 SUV (Creta Rival) Could Be Unveiled By Mid-2022

Toyota-Suzuki JV is working on a new compact SUV for the Indian market. It will be launched during festive season, before Diwali. Latest media reports reveal that the trial production of the SUV has already been commenced. Codenamed Toyota D22, the new SUV is expected to be fully revealed by mid 2022 (Around June-July); however, Toyota is yet to make an official announcement on the same.

The new Toyota D22 SUV will be based on the heavily localised TNGA-B or DNGA platform that underpins multiple products in global markets. Maruti’s version, codenamed YFG will also be launched before the end of this year. The new SUVs will be produced at Toyota’s Bidadi based plant. In order to achieve competitive pricing, the new SUVs will be produced using a combination of suppliers from Suzuki and Toyota. The report claims that bulk of the suppliers are from Maruti Suzuki’s set of component makers. Toyota will supply critical systems for the development of new models.

Suzuki and Toyota have no plans to introduce the diesel version of the new SUV. Instead, the Japanese duo focusing on bringing strong hybrid powertrains in the market. The new Toyota D22 SUV is expected to be offered with two petrol engines – one with a mild hybrid system and another with a stronger hybrid system. The regular model is likely to get Suzuki’s 1.5L Dualjet K15C petrol engine with SHVS mild hybrid system. The stronger hybrid unit will come with a bigger battery pack and electric motors. This model could run only in EV mode, which should improve the fuel efficiency as well as performance.

TDS Battery (Toshiba Denso Suzuki) has already started manufacturing battery system in Gujarat. It is expected that the battery tech for the stronger and mild hybrid system will be supplied by TDS Battery. The new model will also receive several high-end features such as a larger touchscreen infotainment system with wireless connectivity, powered driver’s seat, ventilated seats, paddle shifters, cruise control, 360 degree view camera, automatic AC, a factory-fitted sunroof, connected car tech and others. The new SUV could also receive ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistant System).
