New Toyota 7-Seater SUV – Hybrid Tech, Innova Hycross’ Platform

Toyota Kirloskar Motor aims to expand its product portfolio with a new, big-size SUV in the coming years. The model is currently under consideration and it’s reported to be based on the Corolla Cross. In terms of size and pricing, the new Toyota 7-seater SUV will be positioned against the Hyundai Tucson and Jeep Meridian.

The new Toyota 7-seater SUV will be designed on the brand’s TNGA-C platform that also underpins the Innova Hycross. The architecture, which has lighter and more compact components, will also be used for Toyota’s future front and rear-wheel drive models. The carmaker claims that its TNGA-based vehicles will have the lowest centre of gravity than their rivals and provide much-improved handling. In fact, these vehicles will be around 30-65 percent stiffer than its current offerings and promise 25 percent better fuel efficiency.

The wheelbase of the new 7-seater Toyota SUV will be 2,640mm, thus enabling it to accommodate an extra row of seats. Similar to the Innova Hycross, the new SUV will come with the flat foldable seats. The carmaker will equip longer rear doors along with a newly-designed front fascia and an electrically operated tailgate.

Globally, the Toyota Corolla Cross is available with a 1.8L petrol engine. Here, the new Toyota 7-seater SUV might share its powertrain with the Innova Hycross. The latter comes with the 2.0L, 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle and 2.0L petrol engines making power worth 184bhp and 172bhp with 205Nm. The hybrid version comes with an e-Drive transmission, while the non-hybrid model is available with a CVT gearbox. Toyota says that the Innova Hycros hybrid offers a fuel efficiency of 23.24kmpl.

The Japanese automaker will also bring in more C and D segments in the country. This year, the company is reported to introduce the Maruti Suzuki Fronx-based coupe SUV. The model will use the same 1.0L Boosterjet turbo petrol and 1.2L Dualjet petrol engines, boosted with the mild hybrid tech.
