New MG Compact SUV Launch In Late 2021 – Sonet, Venue Rival?

MG Motor India recently introduced the Hector and Hector Plus petrol CVT variants priced between Rs 16.51 lakh – Rs 17.21 lakh and Rs 18.09 lakh – Rs 18.89 lakh respectively. Speaking to a media publication, Gaurav Gupta, Chief Commercial Officer, MG Motor India, has revealed that the company is planning to launch a new SUV towards the end 2021. Details of the upcoming new MG compact SUV are still under the wraps. Though, it’s likely to be a sub-4 meter SUV or a mid-size SUV.

The new MG compact SUV will sit below the Hector In the company’s product lineup. It will be the most affordable model from the British carmaker in the country. If it will be a subcompact SUV, the model will be placed against the cars like Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300. The model is expected to be priced below Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). The upcoming MG compact SUV might be based on the China-spec Baojun 510, which was spotted multiple times in India.

Baojun RS-3 specs

For people not in the know, the Baojun 510 was replaced with the Baojun RS-3 in 2019. While the China-spec RS-3 measures 4305mm in length, the new MG SUV for India (if planned) will be trimmed down to achieve sub-4 meter length. The former comes with a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine that’s good enough for 104bhp. Transmission choices include a CVT automatic and a 6-speed manual.

The British carmaker has also planned to launch the MG ZS petrol in the second half of 2021. Once launched, it will take on the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta and the upcoming Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun. The new MG compact SUV might be offered with the 1.0L turbo petrol motor and 1.3L turbocharged petrol motor options. Its prices are likely to start from Rs 9 lakh and go up to Rs 13 lakh (ex-showroom).
