The mid-size SUV segment that’s currently dominated by Hyundai Creta will soon going to be crowded with several new product launches. Car manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki, Jeep, Honda and Toyota are planning to foray into the mid-size SUV segment in the next 2-3 years. Talking about the upcoming Maruti-Toyota SUV, the new models are reported to hit roads during 2022 Diwali season. Both models will be designed on Toyota’s DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) modular platform and manufactured at Toyota’s Bidadi based plant in Karnataka.
While Maruti’s upcoming SUV has been codenamed YFG, the new Toyota SUV is internally known as D22. Both SUVs are expected to measure around 4.2 meters in length. As of now, details of the vehicles are scanty. Though, we expect them to be packed with some advanced goodies such as e-SIM based connected car technology, wireless phone charging, a large infotainment system with latest smartphone connectivity, an electric sunroof and LED lighting system.
Rumour has it that the upcoming Maruti and Toyota mid-size SUVs could be offered with Suzuki’s 1.5L petrol engine boosted with a stronger hybrid technology. The petrol unit delivers power worth 104bhp and 138Nm of torque. The Japanese automaker might also use the Swift Sport’s 1.4L Boosterjet engine and its new 1.2L turbocharged petrol motor.
Design and styling of the new Maruti, Toyota SUV will be different. Both models, however, will share body panels and several components. If reports are to be believed, Maruti Suzuki aims to achieve 5 star Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) safety rating with its upcoming mid-size SUV. Just so you know, the most of the Maruti cars are designed on Suzuki’s lightweight Heartect platform. The company also plans to pack its new models with high-end features such as connected car tech.
