New-generation Maruti Alto – What To Expect?

New Maruti Alto 2018

Here’re five things we can expect from the new-generation Maruti Suzuki Alto.

Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturer had introduced the Alto brand name in September 2000.  In its 18 years of existence, the hatchback remained India’s top-selling model for over 14 consecutive years. In March 2018, the Alto achieved the feat of 35 lakh units in cumulative sales. Now, the carmaker is gearing up to give a generation change to its highly-popular hatchback. While the new Maruti Alto is reported to hit roads sometime in 2020-21, here’re five things we can expect from the new model.

1. Crossover-ish Design

Unlike the current model, that has conventional design, the new Maruti Alto 2018 will carry crossover-ish stance and design elements. This will help it withstand the Renault Kwid and the upcoming new Hyundai Santro. The new-gen Alto is likely to feature bold and aggressive styling combined with high ground clearance.

2. New Platform

While the carmaker remained tight lipped about the new Maruti Alto 2020, it is rumored to be based on Suzuki’s new HEARTECT platform.  This new architecture is composed of high-tensile steel that makes the vehicle lighter, and ensures better safety and performance. It will also improve handling and driving dynamics of the car. The HEARTECT architecture is already used in the new-generation Swift and Dzire, Baleno and Ignis. The upcoming Maruti Ertiga will also be based the same new platform. Read – Maruti Suzuki Zen To Make A Comeback As Compact SUV

3. More Powerful Engine

Speculations are on rife that the new Maruti Alto 2020 will be packed with a more refined 660cc engine that could be tuned for two states of tune. The naturally aspired model will be capable to deliver a peak power of 45bhp and the turbocharged variant will push out power close to 51bhp. Rumor also has it that Maruti might introduce a diesel powertrain with the SHVS technology. The hatchback might also get Maruti Suzuki’s ASG (Automated Shift Gearbox) technology along with the conventional 5-speed manual transmission. Read: New Maruti Ciaz Facelift – 5 Things You Should Know

4. High On Fuel Efficiency

If the new-gen Alto comes with the new platform and refined powertrain, it will surely be more fuel efficient than the current model. On the Japan-spec model, the small displacement 660cc motor delivers a claimed mileage of over 30kmpl. If this engine makes its way to India, the 2020 Maruti Alto will become the most fuel economical car in the country. Read – Upcoming Maruti Suzuki Cars In India

5. More Features

Maruti is likely to equip the new Alto with several advanced comfort and safety fitments. The hatchback might get a new touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Bluetooth, USB and AUX connectivity options. The audio system could also be updated. The carmaker might also improve the material quality of the cabin.
