The second-generation Mahindra Thar is selling like a hot cake since its launch in October, 2020. The carmaker has confirmed that the off-road SUV gathered 6,500 bookings in the last month of the previous year. 50 per cent bookings came for the automatic variants. Due to high demand, the new Mahindra Thar has already been sold out till May 2021. It has also stretched the SUV’s waiting period to over 10 months, depending on the variant. While the Hard top petrol variants command a waiting period of 40-41 weeks, the Hard top diesel models are observing waiting period of 39-40 weeks. Customers have to wait up to 22-24 weeks for the Thar convertible top models. One must note that the carmaker has removed the entry-level AX Std, AX and AX (O) variants from the model lineup.
In December 2020, the home-grown carmaker registered a growth of 3 per cent with total sales of 16182 units. It includes 16050 units of the utility vehicles and 132 units of cars and vans. Mahindra & Mahindra’s total sales stood at 35,187 units including passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and exports.
Recently, Mahindra & Mahindra and Ford Motor Company called off their joint venture, which was announced back in October 2019. The reason behind the breakup is said to the fundamental changes in global economic and business situations caused by global pandemic. However, both companies will continue to work jointly for their upcoming C-segment SUVs for the Indian market. In fact, Mahindra will also provide its 1.2L TGDi turbocharged petrol engine to Ford for the EcoSport subcompact SUV.
In other updates, Mahindra & Mahindra is getting ready to launch the new-generation XUV500, followed by the Scorpio. This year, the carmaker has also planned two electric SUVs including eKUV100 and eXUV300 that were previewed at the 2020 Auto Expo.
