New Mahindra Thar 2020 – Launch, Petrol-Diesel Engines, Interior
It was speculated that Mahindra will introduce the new-gen Thar lifestyle SUV at the 2020 Auto Expo; that didn’t happen. The new Mahindra Thar 2020 is expected to be launched in the next couple of months, which is around March-April 2020. The new model will receive comprehensive design changes, new platform, new engine line-up and feature-loaded cabin.
New Engine Line-Up
The upcoming Thar will receive an all-new 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine, which will also power the next-gen Scorpio and the XUV500. It is rumoured to produce around 140bhp of power and over 300Nm of torque. What’s interesting is that the company is also likely to introduce the petrol-powered Thar in India.
At the Auto Expo 2020, Mahindra showcased its new mStallion petrol engine line-up with displacements of 1.2L, 1.5L and 2.0L. It is expected that the new Mahindra Thar 2020 will receive the 2.0L 4-cylinder, mStallion petrol engine with manual and automatic gearbox option. New Platform
The new-gen Mahindra Thar 2020 will be based on the new GEN3 platform, which underpins the current Scorpio SUV. With this platform, the new model will be compliant with the new safety norms as well as the upcoming pedestrian safety standards.
Bigger and Bolder
The Mahindra Thar 2020 will retain the rugged and popular design of the predecessor. However, the new model will significantly grow in size and will have modern design elements. The spy images reveal that the new Thar will have the trademark Mahindra seven-slat grille, round headlamps, flared wheel arches, new LED tail lamps, a factory-fitted hard-top variant and five-spoke alloy wheels.
Modern Interior
The new Thar will come with all-new interior with modern-day features. It will have a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, automatic climate control and multi-functional steering wheel. Adding to it, the SUV will get multi-info display, remote locking and front power windows. Dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, seat-belt reminder, central locking and speed alert will come as standard.
Launch Timeline & Expected Price
The new Mahindra Thar 2020 is most likely to be launched in April 2020. Once launched, it will take on the new Force Gurkha that is scheduled to go on sale in April. The new model is expected to be priced around Rs 10 lakh.
