The long-awaited new-gen Mahindra Scorpio is scheduled to be launched in the Indian market in 2022. The company hasn’t officially revealed the launch timeline. However, Anish Shah, MD of Mahindra & Mahindra said that the company will have an all-new model within a quarter (April-June 2022). The new model could be the new gen Scorpio that has been spotted testing several times on the Indian roads.
At Pune Alternate Fuel Conclave, Anish Shah said that Mahindra believes that by 2030 – 50 percent of cars sold will be electric vehicles. He also stated that Mahindra is considering introducing electric SUVs based on the ladder-on-frame chassis.
The new-gen Mahindra Scorpio will be based on the ladder-on-frame chassis that underpins the new Thar. The new model will grow in size and will offer forward facing third row of seats. It will also get a six-seater derivative, which will have captain seats in the second row. The current model is available in multiple seating layouts including 7-seats with captain seats, 7-seats with side facing seats, 8-seats front facing and 9-seats with side facing.
It is expected that Mahindra could unveil the new Scorpio in June, as the Scorpio nameplate will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in June 2022. The new model will be offered with several high-end comfort and convenince features. It will have a 360 degree camera, dual-zone climate control, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, a push start/stop button, an electric sunroof, etc. The SUV will get 6 airbags, Terrain modes & connected car tech.
The new-gen Mahindra Scorpio is expected to be offered with two engine options – a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel. The diesel engine is likely to be offered with two states of tunes – 130bhp/300Nm & close to 155bhp/360Nm. Transmission choices are likely to include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. The higher variants will also receive a 4×4 drivetrain along with terrain modes & drive modes.
