2020 Mahindra Scorpio Expected Launch Details, Price & Specs

The new-generation Mahindra Scoprio will hit Indian roads sometime in 2020.

Mahindra & Mahindra is ready to upgrade its product lineup in India in a couple of years. The home-grown carmaker will give a generation change to its four popular SUVs – Scorpio, XUV500, Bolero and Thar. Besides this, the company will bring in the facelifted versions of the existing models including TUV300. Internally known as Mahindra Z101, the next-generation Mahindra Scorpio will be one among to hit showroom next year. The SUV’s new-generation model will sit on updated platform (Gen 3) and carry an all-new design language. Though, it will continue to feature a body-on-frame chassis. Besides this, the new Mahindra Scorpio 2020 will have more feature packed interior, better safety equipment and a more powerful engine. If reports are to be believed, the SUV carline will drop the existing 140bhp, 2.2L mHawk diesel engine for a new BS6-ready 160bhp, 2,0L diesel motor. It might also receive an automatic gearbox and FWD (front-wheel-drive) system.

The home-grown carmaker hasn’t yet announced the launch date and details of the new-generation Scorpio. Reports suggest that the SUV will arrive in the market before the BS6 emission norms will be enforced across the nation – i.e. 1st April, 2020. Sitting on an updated underpinning, the 2020 Mahindra Scorpio will come with improved styling, well-equipped interior and more safety features. The SUV will also receive a new, more powerful 2.0L diesel engine that will meet the upcoming BS6 emission norms. The SUV’s all-new model will come in 5 trims – S3, S5, S7, S9 and S11. Its prices are likely to start from Rs 12 lakh and go up to Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom). The all-new Scorpio will continue to take on the Tata Safari Strome. Currently, the SUV carline is available in the price range of Rs 9.99 lakh (for the base S3 variant) – Rs 16.37 lakh (for the top-spec S11 variant). All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.

Mahindra & Mahindra is working on a new 2.0L diesel engine that will comply with the upcoming BS6 (Bharat Stage VI) emission regulations. This powertrain will deliver three different states of tune – 140bhp, 160bhp and 185bhp. The new Mahindra Scorpio 2020 will receive the 160bhp version of the new oil burner, thus making it 20bhp more powerful than the current model. Mahindra’s new diesel powertrain will also be quieter and lighter (80kg) than the current 2.2-litre mHawk unit. Rumour also has it that Mahindra might introduce a newly-developed 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine on the 2020 Mahindra Scorpio carline. This gasoline unit will be developed jointly by Mahindra and SsangYong, generating power close to 217PS. The SUV might also receive an automatic transmission along with the conventional 6-speed manual gearbox. It will continue to come with 2WD and 4WD options.

New Mahindra Scorpio 2020 Mileage

As mentioned above, the 2020 Mahindra Scorpio is likely to receive a new BS6-ready 2.0L diesel engine that will be more powerful and lighter than the existing 2.2L mHawk oil burner. It would be quite early to comment on its fuel economy. Though, we expect it to be slightly more frugal in nature. Currently, the SUV returns a claimed mileage of 13.25kmpl in city and 16.36kml on highways.

Design and styling of the 2020 Mahindra Scorpio will be completely different from the existing model. Though, it will retain the original silhouette and bold stance along with the body-on-frame chassis. The latest spy pictures confirm that the new Scorpio will feature a newly-developed vertical slatted front grille, wider air-dams, new LED DRLs (daytime running lights) and skid plate. The front and rear bumpers might also be revised. The SUV will get more pronounced wheel arches, bolder shoulder lines, blacked out pillars and extended rear overhang. The updated model will be based on updated version of the existing platform and it’s likely to sit lower than the current one.

No changes will be made to its dimensions. The overall length, width and height of the 2020 Mahindra Scorpio will measure 4456mm, 1820mm and 1930mm respectively. It will sit on a 2680mm long wheelbase and offer fuel tank capacity of 60L. Its turning radius will stand at 5.4m.

New Mahindra Scorpio 2020 Interior

The 2020 Mahindra Scorpio is likely to see comprehensive changes inside the cabin. It might get a newly-designed and wider dashboard along with a new 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity as we have seen in the Mahindra Alturas G4. The lower variants are likely to get a smaller 7.0-inch unit carried over from the XUV300. Some of its features are likely to be borrowed from the Marazzo including instrument cluster, gear knob, steering wheel and control stalks. The seat upholstery might also be improved. The all-new Scorpio will also be packed with several segment-leading features. The top-spec variant is likely to be offered with an electric sunroof.

Mahindra & Mahindra will surely improve safety quotient of the 2020 Mahindra Scorpio. The updated SUV carline is likely to get dual airbags (driver + passenger), ABS (anti-lock braking system), panic brake indication, anti-theft warning and speed alert system as standard safety features. It will continue to offer collapsible steering column and side instrusion beams, engine immobliser, seat belt rminder lamp and auto door lock while driving.
