New Kia Carnival 8-Seater Scored 5 Star Crash Test Rating In A-NCAP

Kia Motors had unveiled the new generation Carnival MPV in 2020. The MPV is on sale in select international markets and will also be launched in India in 2022. The fourth generation Kia Carnival has scored a 5 star rating in Australian NCAP Crash Test.

According to the A-NCAP, the Kia Carnival 8-seater variants achieved good scores across the range of occupant protection and collision avoidance assessment areas. The 8-seater MPV comes equipped with high-end safety features such as head-protecting airbags and intelligent seatbelt reminders for all three seating rows, autonomous emergency braking, active lane keeping, and fatigue monitoring.

The Kia Carnival is claimed to have performed better for Adult Occupant Protection. It scored maximum points in the side impact and oblique pole tests. The Carnival gets good scores in the challenging MPDB frontal offset and full-width frontal tests. Maximum points were also awarded for Child Occupant Protection (COP) in the frontal offset and side impact tests.

The MPV is equipped with top tether and ISOFIX anchorages for five of its six rear seating positions, giving owners a wide range of options for the installation of child restraints. The Child restraint installation assessment revealed that most restraints could be fitted safely in these locations. However, it was noted that one of the Type A convertible restraints could not be correctly installed in rearward-facing mode using the ISOFix anchorages in the second row outboard seats or the third seating row.

The fitting of any child restraint in the third row centre position is not recommended due to the lack of top tether and ISOFIX anchorages in that location. The Autonomous Emergency Braking System performance test also showed very good results with collisions avoided or mitigated in all vehicle-to-vehicle test scenarios. Similarly, the Carnival’s ability to detect and react to pedestrians was Good, while cyclist detection was rated as Adequate.

New Kia Carnival India Launch?

Tae-Jin Park, Kia India Executive Director and Chief Sales and Business Strategy Officer has confirmed that Kia will introduce the new-generation Carnival in India. He didn’t reveal the launch timeline, but it is rumoured to be launched in 2022. The new Carnival measures 5,155mm in length, 1,995mm in width and 1,775mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 3,090mm.

In the international markets, the new Carnival is available with 3 engine options – a 3.5L V6 MPi petrol, a new 2.2L diesel and a 3.5L GDi V6 petrol. The India-spec model is most likely to feature the 2.2-litre diesel engine that produces 200bhp of power and 440Nm of torque. The new engine features aluminium block, which makes it 20 kg lighter than the previous engine’s cast iron block.
