South Korean automaker, Hyundai seems aggressive with its UV strategy to drive its global sales. The company is preparing a new CUV/SUV model for the global markets, which has been spotted testing for the first time in South Korea. It is expected that the new model is based on the popular Hyundai i20 hatchback.
Going by the pictures, it is visible that the small CUV is basically a jacked-up hatchback. The new model seems more like a cross-hatchback with raised ground clearance and rugged design elements. Features like blackened cladding around the body and roof rails seem identical to the i20 Active. Adding to it, the blackened C-pillar and round reflectors lamp and reverse light resembles the i20 Active. Also See – Upcoming Hyundai Cars In India
The new Hyundai A-segment CUV will be positioned below the Hyundai Kona and the upcoming Hyundai Carlino compact SUV, which is scheduled to be launched in 2019. The new model is likely to get a 1.0-litre or 1.2-litre petrol engines. The company could also opt for the 1.0-litre T-GDI turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol engine or the 1.25-litre MPi naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine. For transmission duties, the CUV could get a 5-speed or 6-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic unit.
It is expected that Hyundai is preparing the i20 Active with subtle design changes for the domestic market. Media reports claim that the small CUV could be called ‘Leonis’. The new model is likely to be produced at Hyundai’s new plant in Gwangju city, South Korea.
