Next-gen Hyundai Creta will source 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engine from Kia SP2i

Hyundai will launch the next-gen Creta SUV in the Indian market in the second half of 2020. Media reports claim that the new Creta will be available in 5- and 7-seat configurations. While the 5-seater model is expected to arrive in 2020, the 7-seater model could be launched in early 2020. It is likely that the all-new Hyundai Creta will be based on the upcoming Kia SP2i’s platform.

The Kia SP2i SUV will be a 5-seater SUV. The platform used in this SUV is compatible to accommodate a 7-seater SUV. Hyundai could use this platform instead of making an all-new platform to develop the next-gen Creta. For people not in the know, Hyundai is Kia’s parent brand and both brands share platforms and technologies in foreign markets. The Korean brands could follow the international strategy in India to curb pricing and introduce products at affordable rates.

Not just platform, the next-gen Hyundai Creta is likely to source engines from the Kia sibling. The SP2i is expected to be powered by a newly developed 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. Adding to it, the company is also working on a performance oriented version of the SP2i SUV, which is likely to get a 140bhp, 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine. These engines will be BSVI ready and will require minimal upgrades to meet the upcoming BSVI emission norms. The next-gen Hyundai Creta will see a significant rise in the pricing and will be positioned against the likes of Tata Harrier and Mahindra XUV500. Previous media reports claim that the next-gen Hyundai Tucson will be a 7-seater SUV and will replace the Santa Fe. The next Creta will take the Tucson’s place in terms of size and positioning.
