We reported earlier that Honda will launch the new City hybrid in the Indian market by mid-2022. A new media report claims that the new Honda City hybrid is nearly production ready. The sedan could be launched in the second quarter of 2022, most probably in April-May.
The Honda City hybrid was originally planned to launch during festive season 2021. However, launch was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This project is reportedly passed the prototype stage. In fact, Honda Cars India management is eager to launch the City hybrid in the country.
Previous reports suggest that the new Honda City hybrid will be one of the most fuel efficient cars in India. It is reportedly to offer mileage close to the Malaysian as well as Thai-spec models. It is expected to return over 27kmpl of mileage, as the Thai-spec & Malaysian-spec models deliver 27.8kmpl and 27.7kmpl respectively. In real world conditions, the new model is expected to return over 20kmpl.
The new City hybrid comes equipped with a 1.5-litre petrol engine that runs a more efficient ‘Atkinson Cycle’. The petrol engine pushes out 98bhp of power, while the electric motor offers 109bhp. The vehicle offers a maximum torque of 253bhp; the petrol engine offers 127Nm and the electric motor offers 253Nm. It is 0.5 seconds quicker than the regular City sedan.
The electric generator and electric motor are combined together and attached to the end of the engine. The engine turns the generator, and also powers the electric motor, which in turn spins the wheels and sends electricity to the lithium ion battery in the boot. The hybrid model is 110kg heavier than the regular model. The boot space has been reduced by around 90-litres to 410-litres. This model also comes with rear disc brakes as well as an electric parking brake.
