New-Gen Honda City Production Starts; Launch Next Month

Production of the fifth-generation Honda City sedan has been commenced at the carmaker’s Greater Noida based plant in Uttar-Pradesh. The company has resumed production operations from mid June following its new safety protocols and government regulations for COVID-19 prevention. Scheduled to launch in July 2020, the all-new City is claimed to an “engineering marvel on all aspects of design, technology and features”.

The 2020 Honda City has witnessed significant cosmetic and dimensional changes. The new model is bigger than the outgoing one, measuring 4549mm in length, 1748mm in width and 1489mm in height. This also makes it longest and widest vehicle in its segment. Besides this, the new City offers several segment-first features including full LED headlamps, Z-shaped wrap-around LED taillamps, a 17.7cm HD full colour TFT meter with G-meter, vehicle stability assist (VSA) with agile handling assist (AHA) and lane watch camera.

Interestingly, the 2020 City is India’s first connected car offering Alexa remote feature along with the next-generation Honda Connect with Telematics control unit. Other exciting features include all-new dashboard with woody garnish, newly styled instrument console, a new 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift lever, new AC dial with Red/Blue illumination and more. The carmaker says that new-generation City has been built on a newly-designed platform enhanced with lightweight, high rigidity and collision safety structure. The new model has bagged 5 star safety rating in ASEAN NCAP crash test. It scored 44.83 points for the adult occupant protection, 22.82 points for child occupant protection and 18.89 points for safety assist technologies.

Engine setup of the 2020 Honda City will include a new 121bhp, 1.5L –VTEC DOHC petrol engine with VTC and the refined 99bhp, 1.5L i-DTEC diesel motor. The sedan lineup can be had either with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a new 7-speed CVT automatic transmission (for the petrol variants only). The new CVT unit features “brake operation step down-shift control” and “full-open acceleration step up-shift control” reducing rubber-band effect.
