The new Fiat Punto B-segment hatchback will be based on the Groupe PSA CMP platform.

Italian automaker, Fiat had discontinued the globally popular Punto (and Palio) hatchback from the global markets. The Fiat Chrysler Automobile under Mike Manley has already said multiple occasions that Fiat is considering returning to the compact hatchback segment. And the popular Punto nameplate was not completely phased out.

A new media report claims that FCA has started working on the new-generation Fiat Punto. Speaking to Auto Express UK, Olivier Francois, executive director of Fiat global confirmed that the new Punto has delayed few times, but the hatchback is now under development. However, he didn’t reveal any information about the hatchback.

What’s interesting is that the next-gen Fiat Punto could be based on the Groupe PSA’s common modular platform (CMP). The Groupe PSA and FCA joined hands in November 2019 to develop new products, platforms and technology. The French automaker’s CMP platform also underpins the new Peugeot 208 that will also be produced in Argentina. The hatch will also be launched in Brazil from August.

Similar to the Peugeot e-208 and the Opel Corsa, the Fiat Punto based on the CMP platform could also offer an electric version. The new Punto project is in a very early stage of development. In fact, no camouflaged prototypes have been spotted testing. The new-generation Fiat Punto hatchback will be re-introduced for the European markets. The company is already selling the cheaper Tipo subcompact hatchback in Europe. With new Punto, Fiat is planning to re-enter to the local “B” segment that has successful products like the Opel Corsa, Peugeot 208, Volkswagen Polo and the Ford Fiesta.

The new Punto won’t be launched in the Brazil or in India. While Fiat is selling the Argo hatchback in Brazil, FCA has discontinued the Fiat brand from our market. The company is banking on Jeep to drive sales in the Indian market. What’s interesting is that Groupe PSA is planning to bring the CMP platform in India. Citroen will launch 3 new models – C21 compact SUV, hatchback and a new sedan – based on this platform.
