Here’re some of the norms that will be implemented this year to make safer driving environment.

The recent NCAP crash tests made us aware of how safe and unsafe passenger vehicles are in India. And fortunately digital savy buyers are now preferring safer variants of the vehicles instead of the affordable one. However, India still need to do a lot when it comes to safety in both two-wheeler and four-wheeler segments. Here’re some of the norms that will be implemented this year to make safer driving environment. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will make ABS (anti-lock braking system) mandatory for all four-wheelers (including existing models) and two-wheelers with an engine displacement above 125cc from April 1, 2019. Just so you know, the CBS (Combi braking system) has been made compulsory for all new two-wheelers launched after April 1, 2018. ABS, with the help of wheel speed sensors, prevents skidding and enables driver/rider to control vehicle in panic braking situations.

Advanced safety features such as airbags, a seatbelt reminder for driver and co-driver, speed alert system, manual override, rear parking sensors and a speed warning system will also be mandatory for all cars from July 1, 2019. While the speed alert system will address the issue of overspeeding and its consequences, other features will make cars safer for occupants. The speed alert/warning system will make driver aware of speed above 80kmph in every 60 seconds, and it will continue to beep at speeds over 120kmph.

In October 2017, the government introduced stringent safety norms under which all the cars have to go through mandatory crash tests. This will become mandatory for all the cars from October 1, 2019. Similarly, the pedestrian safety features will be mandatory for all new cars that will be launched after October 1, 2019. It will be implacable for all new models from October, 2020.
