Considering the cult following Bajaj Chetak had during its time, the relaunch of the same brand might just work in the company’s favour.
January 6, 2017 – Rumours around the relaunch of the Bajaj Chetak brand have been doing rounds for a really long time, but Bajaj Auto has always maintained its silence over it. Patent images of the scooter have been leaked online, indicating that the new Bajaj Chetak 2017 will go into production.
The report also claims that the company has already applied for the patent, and might launch it in 2017. Considering the cult following Bajaj Chetak had during its time, the relaunch of the same brand might just work in the company’s favour. Also, the leaked picture hints at Bajaj Auto trying to make it look a bit retro to target premium scooter buyers. Having said that, the new Bajaj Chetak will be a unisex scooter for people of all ages unlike the Piaggio Vespa that mainly targets young female buyers.
With the growing popularity of the Piaggio Vespa range and the entry of the Aprilia SR150 in the same segment, Bajaj probably sees a huge opportunity there. Though we expect the Pune-based two-wheeler maker to keep the prices of the new Bajaj Chetak 2017 a lot more aggressive than all of its rivals.
Reports doing rounds on the internet claim that the 2017 Bajaj Chetak will be rolled out sometime in the year 2017. And since the company has already applied for its patent and the vehicle’s R&D must be in its final stage. We’ll update you more on this as soon as the company reveals something.
This is too early to comment on the pricing of the product, but we just hope the company keeps it around Rs 58,000 – Rs 60,000 price bracket. At this price point, the company will be able to attract a larger set of buyers.
|Specifications||Bajaj Chetak 2017 (Expected)|
As of now there is no clue about the engine that will power the new Bajaj Chetak, but we can safely assume it to feature a 125cc engine mated to a CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic gearbox. This could be a single-cylinder, air-cooled powertrain featuring the company’s DTS-i tech. Just like most of its rivals, the engine’s maximum power might be between 9bhp to 10bhp.
The leaked images suggest that the new Bajaj Chetak will get the retro styling along with modern day features. The premium scooter features upright handle bar that offers comfortable riding position for both city as well as highway rides. The big seats with slightly upward rear and wider foot pegs will give comfortable ride for pillion as well. Going by the larger seats, we expect a bigger boot to carry a full-size helmet and a larger fuel tank.
The front fascia of the scooter gets an attractive design with sharp and nicely formed lines. Featuring an oval-shaped headlamp with chrome bezel reminds us the original Chetak. There is lots of chrome treatment all around the scooter to give it a premium yet retro feel. It features air scoop on either side of the side body panel, sport brushed aluminium grab rails and LED turn indicators and brake lights. The scooter is also likely to get all-digital instrument panel and USB charging port.
The suspension mechanism of the scooter comprises of a single-arm front suspension and a monoshock at the rear. Braking duties will be carried out by drum brakes at both ends. The company might also offer rear disc brake as an optional feature.
