The new 2020 Mahindra XUV500 will come with a new, more powerful BS6-ready diesel engine.

Mahindra & Mahindra aims to expand its Indian product lineup with a range of new models and facelifts of the existing SUVs. While the Mahindra XUV300 subcompact SUV will be the first launch from the home-grown carmaker this year, the TUV300 facelift will hit showrooms in coming months. Besides these two products, the company will give a generation change to its highly popular SUVs including Thar, Bolero, Scorpio and XUV500.

Reports suggest that the next-generation Thar will go on sale by the end of this year and the new Scorpio and XUV500 will see a release before April 2020. The new 2020 Mahindra XUV500 (codename – W601) will witness radical aesthetic and feature changes along with a new platform and BS6-ready powertrain. With the generation change, the Mahindra XUV500 will see comprehensive upgrades in terms of exterior styling, equipment levels and performance. Ditching the existing powertrain, the SUV will get a new, more powerful 2.0L diesel engine that will meet the future BS6 emission norms. These updates will surely make it slightly more expensive than the current model that costs between Rs 12.65 lakh – Rs 19.41 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Speculations suggest that the new 2020 Mahindra XUV500 price might start from Rs 14 lakh and go up to Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom). In this price range, it will take on multiple products right from the Tata Harrier and new Hyundai Creta 7-seater to the upcoming 5-seater SUVs such as Kia SP concept based vehicle, MG Hector, Skoda Kamiq and Volkswagen T-Cross.

Major change will be made to the engine setup of the new-generation XUV500.  The diesel version of the SUV will source power from a new 2.0-litre instead of the 155bhp, 2.2L motor. The new oil burner will be BS6-compliant producing power close to 180bhp, thus making it around 25bhp more powerful than its replacement. The new 2.0L diesel powertrain will be developed jointly by Mahindra & Mahindra and SsangYong. The petrol variant might continue to feature the existing 2.2L mHawk engine pushing out 140bh with 320Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic transmission will be on offer. New 2020 Mahindra XUV500 Mileage

Underpinning a new platform, the new XUV500 will be lighter, stiffer and more efficient than the current model. The new architecture along with the more powerful and BS6-ready diesel engine will improve fuel efficiency of the vehicle. While official figures will be revealed near its launch, it’s likely to deliver mileage between 15kmpl – 17kmpl. If the petrol version of the SUV will retain the existing powertrain, it will return fuel economy above 13kmpl.

As mentioned above, the 2020 XUV500 will sit on an all-new platform and continue to feature the monocoque-body frame. The same architecture will also be used in Ford’s upcoming new SUV. The vehicle’s new model might derive its design inspiration from the new-generation SsangYong Korando SUV that will debut at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show in March. The carmaker might use expertise from its North American Technical Centre, located in Michigan, USA and the Pininfarina design house. The SUV will carry an all-new design with unique styling bits giving it a more evolved and modern look. Dimensionally, the new 2020 Mahindra XUV500 will be bigger than existing model.

With larger dimensions, the 2020 XUV500 will have more cabin room to offer. Mahindra might also pack the SUV with several segment-first features. However, the details are unknown to us. The new model will have better structure integrity and meet the future crash safety norms. It’s likely to get airbags, speed alert system, seat-belt reminders, manual override over the central locking system for emergencies and reverse parking sensors as standard fitments.
