The Mitsubishi Expander crossover will have a perfect blend of “toughness of an SUV with the versatility of an MPV”, claims the company.

Mitsubishi, the Japanese automaker has officially revealed the new 2018 Mitsubishi Expander crossover MPV in Indonesia. The vehicle will make its public debut at the Jakarta Motor Show on August 10, 2017. This crossover MPV was first previewed as Mitsubishi XM crossover MPV concept at the 2016 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIAS). The vehicle will be developed and launched in Indonesia, and will be exported to select ASEAN markets including Thailand and Philippines. It looks like a worthy competitor to the 7-seater Honda BRV.

The Mitsubishi Expander will go on sale in the Indonesian market on August 10 at the GIIAS 2017, in Jakarta. Mitsubishi is yet to confirm whether this crossover MPV will come to India. The vehicle will be produced at the company’s new manufacturing facility in Bekasi, West Java, Indonesia. The Mitsubishi Expander 7-seater crossover carries Mitsubishi’s new design philosophy – Dynamic Shield, and looks quite sporty.

The Expander crossover MPV measures 4,475mm in length, 1,750mm in width and 1,700mm in height. It comes with a ground clearance of 205mm, which is more than sufficient to tackle both on-and off-road capabilities. This new people mover has enough space to accommodate seven people across three rows of seats.

The front fascia of the XM MPV shares strong resemblance with the Mitsubishi eX concept. The SUV’s front grille gets a layered look and has Mitsubishi’s contemporary X shaped radiator grille and sharp looking full LED headlamps. It comes with heavily sculpted wheel arches, floating roof with rails, and strong character lines. The side profile is highlighted by long greenhouse and blacked-out D pillar, while the black rear design of the crossover looks similar to the eX concept.

Mitsubishi claims that the Expander combines “toughness of an SUV with the versatility of an MPV”. With three rows of seats, the Expander will offer enough space for seven occupants. The cabin will feature wide elevated center console, silver treatment and dual tone high contrast interior. Adding to it, the vehicle is claimed to be designed to travel long distance, with the ability to cope with bad roads and floods from a high ground clearance. Talking about features, the Mitsubishi Expander has LED front and rear lights, air conditioning, faux wood, electric windows, leather trim and a touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth phone connectivity.

Mitsubishi has invested 600 million USD (250 million USD to develop the MPV) for this product and new production plant. The company also plans to export the XM to other South East Asian markets including Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. It will be powered by the 1500cc 4A91 engine, which is basically the reassembled version of the engine offered on the Mitsubishi Colt. Power will be transmitted to the front wheels via an automatic transmission that has CVT technology with six virtual speeds. This engine is capable of producing 120PS of power at 6,000rpm and a peak torque of 145Nm at 4,000rpm.
