MG Motor has confirmed that its first product for the Indian market will be a SUV that will hit roads in the first half of next year. Trail production of the vehicle has already begun at the company’s Halol plant in Gujarat. Reports suggest that MG’s new SUV will be based on the Baojun 530 SUV, which is retailed in the Chinese market. In India, it will be gun up straight against the Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson.

According to a media report the first MG SUV will come with both petrol and diesel powertrains – a 168bhp, 1.5L direct injection turbo and a 2.0L diesel (Fiat sourced). Transmission choices will include a 7-speed automatic unit. Globally, the Baojun 530 is offered with two petrol engines – a 147.9bhp, 1.5L turbocharged and a 137bhp, 1.8L unit. Read: MG ZS Compact SUV – 5 Things You Need To Know
