MG5 Electric Estate Makes India Debut – 400km Range

MG Motor India has displayed the new MG5 electric Estate at the 2023 Auto Expo. First launched in Europe in March 2022, the MG 5 Estate is the world’s first all-electric station wagon and is available with two battery variants. Alongside the MG5, the British carmaker has showcased the MG4 electric hatchback and the Air EV in the pre-production form at the 16th edition of Indian Auto Expo.

The MG 5 all-electric station wagon is claimed to offer lots of practicality and functionality. It measures 4,600mm in length, 1,818mm in widt and 1,543mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,665mm. The station wagon offers a spacious interior with 27 storage compartments in the front and rear. It offers a boot space of 479-litres, which can be expanded to 1,367-litres by folding the rear seats. The MG5 electric is claimed to have a maximum towing weight of 500kg, maximum trailer nose weight of 50kg and roof load of 75kg. It is suitable for a bicycle carrier and roof box.

The MG5 electric is available with two battery pack options – a 61.1 kWh battery and a 50.3 kWh. The former is claimed to offer a range of 400km on a single charge. The front wheels are driven by an electric motor producing 156hp and 280Nm of torque. The 50.3kWh battery pack offers 320km range, and the electric motor produces 177hp and 280Nm of torque. The MG 5 electric estate is claimed to achieve 0-100kmph acceleration in 8.3 seconds before hitting a top speed of 185kmph. The standard and Long Range versions offer 3-phase AC charging capability at a public charging point (AC) up to 11kW. Both batteries supports DC fast-charging up to 87 kW, which charges the battery up to 80% in about 40 minutes.

The standard features include AC with a PM2.5 air filter, LED lighting, heated front seats, parking aid, 7-inch digital cluster, 16-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry & others. The SUV gets nine advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) with features like adaptive cruise control, front collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane keep assistance and traffic jam assistance.

The higher variant comes with climate control, 360 degree parking camera, electrically adjustable driver’s seat including lumbar support, leatherette upholstery and 17-inch alloy wheels. It comes fitted with a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity. It also gets four USB ports, DAB+ and connection through a smartphone app, with which various functions can be controlled remotely.

The MG5 electric comes fitted with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) system as standard, which allows the battery to supply energy to an external electrical system. User can use this function to charge air pump, kettle, cooling box, e-bike, laptop, electric scooter and others.
