MG Motor India confirmed that its fourth offering for the Indian market will arrive in 2023. The next big launch from the British automaker is likely to be an entry-level electric car based on the Wuling Air EV. Once launched, the new MG electric car will be positioned against the newly-launched Tata Tiago EV. The latter one is being offered in four trims priced from Rs 8.49 lakh to Rs 11.79 lakh. MG has already revealed that its new EV will come under Rs 10 lakh. The upcoming MG Air EV is expected to undercut its arch rival.
In global markets, the MG Air EV is available in two variants – Standard Wheelbase (SWB) and Long Wheelbase (LWB). Both models are 1,505mm wide and 1,631mm tall. Though, the length of the SWB and LWB variants stand at 2,599mm and 2,974mm respectively. The former comes with the 2-seats layout and the latter is available with 4-seats configuration. Here, the company might bring in the two-door body style version.
If reports are to be believed, MG’s engineering team will update its battery thermal management system and air con for adapting Indian driving conditions. The upcoming MG electric car could be introduced with a different nameplate. It has boxy stance and comes equipped with features such as a large touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument console, wireless connectivity, connected car tech and more.
The China-spec Wuling Air EV has been offered with two electric motor options – 30kW (40bhp) and 50kW (67bhp), offering range up to 200km and 300km respectively. Both are paired to a single-speed automatic gearbox. For the India-spec version, MG Motor India will source the battery pack from Tata AutoComp. For people not in the know, Tata AutoComp entered into a joint venture with Chinese battery supplier Gotion for the design, production, supply and service of Li-ion battery packs for EVs in India.
