MG Motors has confirmed that it will officially launch its first product in India in 2019. The company will launch a 5-seater premium SUV to start its innings in the highly competitive Indian market. If latest media report is to be believed, the SUV will use a Fiat-sourced diesel engine.
It is expected that the company will launch the locally developed MG ZS SUV in India. The SUV will be powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that also powers the Jeep Compass. This engine is capable of producing 170bhp of power and 350Nm of torque. The company could detune this engine for the upcoming SUV. This SUV is expected to be positioned against the Jeep Compass.

For people not in the know, the upcoming Tata H5X 5-seater premium SUV will also use this 2.0-litre diesel engine. Not just Tata and MG, Maruti is also planning to source this engine from Fiat. In global markets, MG SUVs are available with petrol engines only. The MG ZS in the UK market is equipped with a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. It also gets a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged motor that produces 111PS and 160Nm of torque. MG has already confirmed that the upcoming SUV will be BSIV compliant, which can be upgraded to meet BSVI norms when they are implemented in April 2020. Besides, MG Motors is also considering introducing the MG ZSe, an all-electric SUV as a halo product in India.
