MG Preparing A Micro SUV With Electric Powertrain For India

MG Motor India will unveil the new Comet mini electric vehicle in our market in April-May 2023. It will be an ultra-compact EV with boxy shape and three-door layout along with several comfort and convenience features. It is designed and developed on MG’s Global Small Electric Vehicle (GSEV) platform, which will also be used to develop a wide range of EVs. A new report claims that the British automaker will introduce a new micro SUV based on the GSEV platform in our market.

MG Motor is aiming to achieve heavy localisation for the Comet EV. In fact, the company is sourcing the battery from Tata Autocomp. The next micro EV will share most of the components and features from the new Comet EV.

The new micro SUV will use the unchanged GSEV platform and will be ultra compact in dimensions. In fact, the report claims that the new MG micro SUV (codename: E260) will measure close to 3 meters in length and will be a three-door model. It will be designed for urban commute and will be a compact, space efficient city car.

It is expected that the new MG micro electric SUV will share styling cues from the Yep micro SUV concept, which was unveiled by Baojun in 2022. This concept has a boxy shape with a very retro-styling, much like the Jimny or Ford Bronco. The new concept has a high riding position, larger wheels and tyres.

The MG Comet is powered by a 17.3kWh battery pack with a single, rear-mounted motor producing 40bhp. The Yep concept was equipped with a dual-motor set-up with over 100hp and all-wheel-drive layout.

The new MG micro electric SUV is expected to be introduced sometime in 2025. MG will have good time to further localise the components of the GSEV platform for this micro SUV. The heavy localisation will help the company to achieve aggressive price for the new micro SUV. Set to be positioned above the MG Comet, the new micro electric SUV is expected to be priced under Rs 15 lakh.
