To be produced at MG Motor’s Halol, Gujarat plant, the MG SUV will challenge the Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson & Tata Harrier

MG Motor will officially enter into Indian market in the first half of 2019. MG has confirmed that its product for our market will be a premium SUV, which will challenge the likes of Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson and the Tata Harrier. Speculations are on rife that the SUV could be called the MG Gloster, though official announcement is yet to be made. Ahead of the possible launch in the 2nd quarter of 2019, the SUV has been spotted testing on the streets of Gujarat. This time, the interior of the SUV have been revealed in a new spy video.

The upcoming MG SUV will be based on the Baojun 530, which is already on sale in the Chinese market. For people not in the know, Baojun is MG’s sister brand owned by SAIC Motor. The India-spec model will be developed with heavy localisation at the company’s Halol, Gujarat based plant. The re-engineered Baojun 530 will receive MG’s signature grille and other cosmetic upgrades.

The vehicle has been spotted multiple times with heavy camouflage, which reveals very little about the design elements. The images suggest that the SUV has sleeker LED DRLs, newly styled LED tail-lights and a thick D-pillar. The SUV will initially come with 5 seat option. Media reports claim that the company could also introduce the 7-seater version at a later stage.

In the spied video, it is visible that the cabin is covered in cloth. Though, it still reveals some of the important details. The centre console of the SUV comes with a large freestanding touchscreen infotainment system, circular knobs positioned right below the display and chrome insert on the dashboard and a flat-bottom multi-functional steering wheel. The SUV will be equipped with several high-end features like dual-zone climate control, electrically adjustable front seats, multiple airbags, smartphone connectivity features like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and segment-first 360-degree camera. The engine details for the MG SUV are yet to be revealed. It is expected that the SUV will be powered by a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre MJD II diesel engine that also powers the Jeep Compass and Tata Harrier. While powering Compass, this engine produces 173bhp of power and 350Nm of torque. The company could also introduce this SUV with a 1.5-litre turbo-charged petrol engine, which currently powers the global MG ZS SUV. Both manual and automatic options are likely to be on offer.
