MG Motor, the British carmaker owned by China based SAIC Motor Corp., is ready to begin its Indian innings in the second quarter of 2019. Prior to that, the company has started the brand promotional activities and showcasing its range of global models in Delhi-NCR region. The MG 3, ZS, HS and RX5 are the four models, which are being put up on display at the Ambience Mall in Gurgaon from 14th to 16th December, 2018.

The public preview events will also be organized at the Cyber Hub in Gurgaon from 21st to 25th December, followed by Mall of India in Noida from 4th to 6th January, 2019. None of the showcased cars have been confirmed for the Indian market. Though, the carmaker announced that its first product in India will be a SUV that will take on the Jeep Compass and the upcoming Tata Harrier.

Rumour has it that the British carmaker might bring in the re-badged Baojun 53 SUV. In order to achieve competitive pricing for its new SUV, the carmaker is planning to achieve localization level up to 80 percent. The company acquired General Motors’ Halol plant in Gujarat and refurbished it with a minimum investment of Rs 2,000 crore. In the first phase, this facility will produce 80,000 units on annual basis.

The second product from the British carmaker in India will be an electric SUV. There is a possibility that the carmaker might bring in the electric version of the showcased MG RX5 or MG ZS. In August 2018, MG revealed its flagship SUV HS for the Chinese market. If the MG 3 hatchback makes its way to India, it will be positioned against the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Hyundai Elite i20. Check Out – Upcoming MG Cars in India
