MG Hector will be bigger and cheaper than Jeep Compass; Launch in May 2019

MG Hector will come at an aggressive price and will be positioned against the likes of Tata Harrier and Mahindra XUV500.

MG Motors is busy doing final preparations before launching the much-awaited MG Hector SUV in India. The company has appointed popular British actor Benedict Cumberbatch as its brand ambassador in India. The Hector is yet to make an official debut, though clear pictures of the SUV have already hit the internet. A new TeamBHP report claims that the MG Hector will come at an aggressive price and will be positioned against the likes of Tata Harrier and Mahindra XUV500. This suggests that the new SUV could be priced in the range of Rs 13 lakh – Rs 18 lakh.

The clear images of the MG Hector reveal that the new model is basically the re-badged Baojun 530. Except for the new front grille, the new model looks exactly similar to the Chinese sibling. For people not in the know, Chevrolet is also selling the re-badged Baojun 530 as the new-gen Captiva in select international markets.

Some of the design highlights include large front grille with chrome surround and MG badge in the centre, a two-tier lighting system, a sporty bumper with a faux-skid plate, machined cut alloys, roof rails and chrome treatment for the strong beltline. The report claims that the rear design shares some resemblance with the Audi Q5, though the spy images reveal that the SUV will look similar to the Baojun 530 from the rear as well. It features the wrap-around tail-lamps with LEDs and roof-mounted spoiler.

The cabin of the MG Hector is equipped with several segment-first features like a 10.4-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment with internet facility and smartphone connectivity, leather upholstery for seats, door panels and steering cover, 7-inch MID, electrically adjustable seats, Harman-sourced Infinity audio system and others. The SUV also gets the segment-largest electronic sunroof and segment-first 360 degree surround view camera.

The MG Hector SUV will be available with 2 engine options – a 141bhp, 1.5-litre turbo petrol and a 170bhp, 2.0-litre diesel from Jeep Compass. Transmission options will include a six-speed manual and a dual-clutch automatic (Petrol only). The company will also introduce the automatic gearbox option in the diesel Hector, though it will arrive on a later stage.

The report further claims that the MG will start deliveries of the new Hector in the end of June 2019. A possible debut in April can’t be ignored. The MG Hector will challenge the likes of Tata Harrier, Hyundai Tucson and Jeep Compass.
