Production of the SUV has already been started at the SAIC’s Halol based plant in Gujarat. The company claims to have achieved close to 75 per cent of localisation. The MG Hector will directly rival the likes of Tata Harrier, Jeep Compass, Mahindra XUV500 and the Hyundai Tucson. It is basically the re-engineered Baojun 530, but MG claims that the Hector has received over 300 India specific changes to suit the needs of buyers. The MG Hector is equipped with several segment-first features like rear seat recliner, heated ORVMs, automatic tailgate, floating LED turn indicators, 360 degree camera, 6-way adjustable driver’s and 4-way adjustable co-passenger seats, 48V mild hybrid system, ESP & Traction control as standard, segment-largest 10.4-inch portrait touchscreen, ambient lighting with 8 colour options, segment-largest panoramic sunroof and Internet option with OTA software updates. The gasoline engine is capable of producing 143bhp and 250Nm, while the oil burner is good for 170bhp and 350Nm of torque. A 6-speed manual gearbox driving the power to the front wheels will come as standard, while a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic will be offered as optional with the petrol model. The hybrid system will only be available with the manual transmission option. It is claimed to deliver 12% more mileage than the regular model.
