The MG Hector is basically the re-engineered Baojun 530 SUV, which is on sale in the Chinese market.
MG Motor India is reportedly to unveil the much-awaited Hector SUV in April 2019. Likely to be launched in June 2019, the MG Hector SUV will challenge the likes of Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson and the Tata Harrier. While the official details are yet to be revealed, a close-to-production model was recently seen during a TV commercial shoot with actor Benedict Cumberbatch at the wheel.
The MG Hector is basically the re-engineered Baojun 530 SUV, which is on sale in the Chinese market. In fact, the new Chevrolet Captiva on sale in select international markets is based on the Baojun 530. MG Motor has made subtle changes to give the SUV a family look. It features the signature grille with honeycomb grille and chrome enhancement and a large ‘MG’ badge at the centre. Chrome treatment can be seen on the front bumpers, while the bumpers come fitted with a brushed aluminum faux skid plate.
The MG Hector is fitted to diamond cut alloy wheels, LED projector headlamps, LED daytime running lamps and a shark-fin antenna. The company aims to achieve 75% localisation for the new SUV. To be manufactured at the SAIC’s Halol based plant in Gujarat, the MG Hector is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 15 lakh – Rs 22 lakh.
The SUV will come equipped with several segment-first features. The Hector will be offered with 2 sunroof options – a smaller one for the lower variants and the segment-largest panoramic sunroof for the top-spec model. It will also get the India’s largest 10.4-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment system, which will be compatible with all the modern features. This touchscreen will also handle the climate control function.
The MG Hector will come with the most advanced interior in the segment, offering internet car functionalities. The Hector is expected to be equipped with its own operating system. Adding to it, the SUV will have an e-SIM card with features like biometrics, real-time traffic info and navigation and AI assistance. It will be the first SUV in India to feature over-the-air (OTA) updates.
The MG Hector will be equipped with a 360-degree camera, a Harman sourced Infinity audio system, push button start and keyless go, cruise control and tyre pressure monitoring system. The SUV will get leather upholstery for seats, steering and gear-knob. Soft touch materials will be offered on the door and the dashboard.
The MG Hector SUV will be available with 2 engine options – a Fiat-sourced 170bhp, 2.0-litre MJD II diesel engine and a new 143bhp, 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Transmission options will include a six-speed manual and a six-speed DCT gearbox (Petrol only).
