MG Hector and Kia SP – 2 All-New SUVs From New Manufacturers For India
MG Hector SUV is scheduled to be launched in June 2019.
Indian auto industry is projected to be the world’s 3rd largest in the next couple of years. Our market has also become an important destination for global brands to expand their presence. Two of the prominent car manufacturers, MG Motor (Owned By Chinese maker – SAIC) and Kia Motor (Owned By Hyundai) will soon enter into the Indian market.
Both the manufacturers will start their innings with SUVs. While Kia plans a mid-sized SUV to challenge the likes of Hyundai Creta and Nissan Kicks, MG will launch a C-segment SUV to rival Tata Harrier, Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson. Kia had showcased the SP SUV concept at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. The company has officially confirmed that the SP based SUV will be launched in the second quarter of 2019. It is based on the modified Creta’s platform, which will also underpin the next-gen Hyundai Creta.
The Kia SP will be powered by a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 118bhp of power. Adding to it, the SUV will also get a newly developed 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine that is likely to offer over 115bhp of power. Both manual and automatic versions will be on offer.
MG Motor India has officially revealed the name of its first SUV, which is called the MG Hector. Based on the Baojun 530, the Hector will be launched in June 2019. It will be longer and more spacious than the Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson. This SUV will have over 75% of local components, which ensures competitive pricing. The Hector will be powered by a 162bhp, 1.5-litre turbo petrol and a 170bhp, 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine.
