MG Gloster Will Be First MG SUV In India; To Challenge Tata Harrier

MG Gloster SUV will hit Indian shores in the second quarter of 2019.

MG Motor is ready to begin its Indian innings with an all-new compact SUV in the second quarter of 2019. According to Economic Times, the British carmaker’s (owned by Chinese auto giant Shanghai Automotive) first product in India will be named – MG Gloster (Baojun 530). In the premium 5-seater SUV space, the MG Gloster will gun up straight against the Jeep Compass and the upcoming Tata Harrier. The SUV has been caught on camera multiple times during its test rounds in India.

The spy pictures suggest that the MG Gloster will feature the signature grille with integrated MG badge, LED daytime running lights with turn light indicators, pronounced lower grille, ORVM integrated turn lights and a set of multi-spoke alloy wheels. Read: MG ZS Compact SUV – 5 Things You Need To Know

With respect to dimensions, the MG Gloster is likely to be bigger than its arch rivals – Jeep Compass and Tata Harrier. Its overall length, width and height are estimated to be around 4,655mm, 1,835mm and 1,760mm respectively. The Compass and Harrier, on the other hand, measure 4395mm (L), 1818mm (W), 1640mm (H) and 4598mm (L), 1894mm (W) and 1714mm (H) respectively. Interior of the MG Gloster SUV will be as premium as its exterior. The list of features might include a free standing touchscreen infotainment system, TFT multi information system, sunroof, all-leather upholstery and electrically adjustable seats. Engine setup of the MG Gloster is likely to include a 1.5L turbocharged petrol and a 2.0L turbocharged diesel (Fiat-sourced) motor. Its power and torque figures will be similar to the Compass and Harrier.  Both powertrains will meet upcoming BS6 emission norms. The automatic transmission and 4WD (four-wheel-drive) system will be reserved for the top-spec trim.
