MG Astor Name Trademarked; Hyundai Creta Rival

We reported earlier that MG ZS Petrol SUV will get a new name in India. MG Motors has now filed a trademark application for the title “Astor”, which is reportedly to be the name for the soon-to-be-launched ZS petrol in India.

MG Astor mid-sized SUV is scheduled to be launched in mid-2021, before Diwali. The SUV will be positioned below the Hector mid-sized SUV, which measures 4.6 meters in length. The MG Astor will measure around 4.3 meters in length, and will rival the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. It will be brand’s new entry-level product and will take MG SUV’s line-up to 4 in India.

Internally called “Model K”, the Astor mid-sized SUV will be based on the facelifted ZS SUV. The SUV will receive significant design changes, upgraded interior and powerful petrol engine options. The SUV will come with revised front fascia, featuring a more prominent front grille, sharper headlamps with LED DRLs, and new bumper. At the back, the SUV will get new set of LED tail-lamps and revised bumper. It will receive a new set of alloy wheels.

Inside the cabin, the MG Astor will receive a larger 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity. The vehicle will also support the upgraded MG iSmart connected car technology. It will come equipped with several high-end comfort and convenience features such as panoramic sunroof, powered driver’s seat, cruise control, automatic AC, 360 degree camera and others.

The MG Astor will be powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine that produces 120bhp of power and 150Nm of torque. The top-spec model is also expected to receive a new 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine that churns out 163bhp of power and 230Nm of torque. Transmission options are likely to include a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed torque convertor automatic and a CVT automatic.

The MG Astor is expected to be priced around Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh. It will be produced locally with high-level of locally-sourced components. The MG ZS EV is introduced as a CKD unit.
