Mercedes-Benz has launched the entry-level E220d diesel variant today in India priced at Rs 57.14 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune). The company had launched the new-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB (Long Wheelbase) early this year in petrol and diesel grades. Just like the current grades in the E-Class range, the new entry-level variant is also based on the long wheelbase version that is sold in Indian and Chinese market.
The new entry-level E220d variant in the carline is a replacement to the E250d trim and gets Mercedes’ new 2.0-litre unit that has replaced the 2.1-litre engine globally. That said the new 2.0-litre, four-cylinder modular unit debuts in India with E220d. In terms of power, it makes 194bhp with 400Nm of torque and is mated to a 9G-Tronic-9-speed automatic gearbox. The new unit propels to 100kmph from zilch within 7.8 seconds while attaining top speed of 240kmph. Compared to the larger capacity 3.0-litre, V6 engine that is used in the 350d, the low displacing engine puts out 64bhp less power and falls short by 220Nm in terms of torque. However, the new unit is more fuel efficient than the larger engine.
As for the design and styling, the entry-level E220d is identical to the regular model save for some comfort and connectivity features available on the 350d variant. Mercedes-Benz has rolled-out the new E220d as a more affordable option over the 350d trim, the omission of some features made it possible to cut down on the pricing. The new E220d trim come with these LED headlamps with daytime running lights, panoramic sunroof, 5-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels on the outside. Insides are plush and pack a plethora of comfort goodies including a three-zone THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control, 64-colour ambient lighting, power adjustable front seats with lumbar support, 12.3-inch COMAND Online infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, power adjustable rear seats, Attention assist, parking pilot and steering-mounted touchpads.
