Mercedes-Benz India today launched its flagship SUV – Mercedes-Benz GLS – in the country at Rs 80.40 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune). At this price, the Mercedes GLS SUV will lock horns with cars like Volvo XC-90 and Audi Q7. The new GLS is, basically, the facelifted GL, and referred as the S-Class of SUVs by the German carmaker.
The SUV receives significant cosmetic upgrades along with a bunch of additional comfort and safety features. The Mercedes-Benz GLS is the first ‘GL’ that will be produced outside the US.

Mercedes GLS India – Exterior
The comprehensive changes have been made to the front fascia of the SUV. The new GLS features a revised grille with dual-slats and bigger signature logo, re-designed Multi-beam headlamps with new LED daytime running lights and muscular bumper with larger air intakes. Though, the side profile remains unchanged. The SUV comes fitted with 20-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels and 275/50 R20 front and rear tyres. Moving towards rear, the GLS gets new LED tail lamps, revised rear bumper and details.
Mercedes GLS India – Interior
Inside the cabin, the Mercedes GLS India SUV looks largely identical to the GL. Though, the car gets a new 8-inch stick-out touchscreen infotainment display with a centre console integrated touch pad, Apple CarPlay, new three-spoke multi-function steering wheel and premium Nappa leather upholstery. The SUV is available with two interior trims – brown open-pore ash wood and light longitudinal-grain aluminium. The new GLS offers a massive boot capacity of 680 with third row up, and 2300-litres with 2nd and 3rd row folded. There is open luggage compartment capacity behind driver’s seat, rear seat and 3rd row seat measuring 1,210-litres, 680-litres and 295-litres respectively.
The SUV ensures high-end safety with features like collision prevention assist, attention assist, crosswind assist, electronic stability program (ESP), brake assist and electronic all-wheel drive (AWD) traction control with 4ETS. Mercedes-Benz also offering a driver-assistance package with the SUV that includes active lane keeping assist, DISTRONIC PLUS with steering assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Pre-Safe brake with pedestrian detection, etc. The Mercedes GLS is a proper 7-seater SUV with backrest angle adjustment for 2nd row and electric folding for 3rd.
Mercedes GLS India – Engine & Transmission
In India, the Mercedes GLS SUV is being offered with a 3.0-litre V6 diesel powertrain that is paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission. This engine is capable of producing a maximum power of 258bhp at 3,400rpm and 620Nm of torque between 1,600rpm – 2,400rpm. The SUV comes with the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. Despite being heavy and huge, the Mercedes GLS can do 0-100 kmph sprints in 7.8 seconds. It offers a top speed of 222kmph.
