Maruti’s Creta and Nexon Rival SUVs To Get Hybrid Technology

Maruti Suzuki is all set to expand its SUV product lineup in coming years. The Indo-Japanese carmaker is working on multiple new SUVs to challenge the cars like Hyundai Creta, Tata Nexon and Mahindra Thar (upcoming 5-door version). According to a fresh media report, the upcoming Maruti Suzuki mid-size SUV (YFG) and the Baleno-based crossover (YTB) are likely to feature hybrid technology under the brand’s Mission Green Million project.

Currently, the carmaker offers a 12V SHVS mild hybrid system in its select models. In its global engine range, the company has a new and stronger 48V SHVS mild hybrid system with electric motor idling and torque fill control functions. As of now, there is no clarity whether the new Maruti Suzuki SUVs will get mild hybrid or stronger hybrid system.

Upcoming Maruti Suzuki SUVs

Talking about the new Maruti mid-size SUV, the model will be developed under Toyota-Maruti joint venture. Toyota’s Bidadi based plant near Bangalore will serve as production hub for the new SUV. If reports are to be believed, the new Maurti SUV will come as a replacement to the S-Cross and might be named ‘Grand Vitara’. Similar to the global-spec Vitara, the model will underpin Suzuki’s Global C-platform.

In the mid-size SUV space, the new Maruti model will face challenge from the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. It will also compete against the upcoming MG ZS petrol, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun. The SUV is likely to enter into production sometime in 2022, which will be followed by its launch. Reports suggest that the new Maruti SUV will be made available with 5-seats and 7-seats configurations.

The Indo-Japanese carmaker’s new sub-4 meter crossover will be based on the Baleno hatchback that will take head-to-head against the Tata Nexon. It would be quite early to comment on its engine. Though, the model is reported to feature Suzuki’s 1.2L petrol motor that does duty in the Baleno. As far as launch is concerned, the new Maruti compact crossover might hit roads in the second half of 2022.
