Maruti-Toyota SUV Launch By Diwali; Likely To Replace S-Cross

Maruti Suzuki had launched the S-Cross crossover in the country in 2015. It was the first product to be sold via NEXA premium dealership network. Despite multiple marketing campaigns and regular updates, the Maruti S-Cross failed to generate volumes for the Indo-Japanese automaker.

A new media report claims that Maruti Suzuki has decided to discontinue the S-Cross crossover from the Indian market. Maruti Suzuki and Toyota JV is working on a new mid-sized SUV, which will replace the ageing S-Cross. For people not in the know, Suzuki has already introduced the new-gen S-Cross in select international markets.

Maruti S-Cross Plus

Codenamed Maruti YFG, the new sports utility vehicle is rumoured to be launched before the end of this year – most probably by Diwali 2022. The new SUV will rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Astor, Skoda Kushaq and the Volkswagen Taigun.

Since 2015, Maruti Suzuki has delivered over 1.65 lakh S-Cross crossovers in the market – recording an average of around 2,000 units per month. On the flip side, Hyundai has sold about 7 lakh Cretas with an average of over 8,000 units per month.

The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross was initially launched with two diesel engine options – a 1.3-litre and a 1.6-litre. Both engines were sourced from Fiat. Due to poor demand, MSIL had discontinued the S-Cross 1.6L version from the market. The company later introduced the petrol derivative of the S-Cross, which is powered by a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine with a mild hybrid system.

Maruti YFG SUV

The new mid-sized SUV is reportedly to be based on heavily localised Toyota’s TNGA-B platform or DNGA. The SUV will be produced at Toyota’s bidadi based plant. Toyota’s version of the YFG (Codenamed D22) will also be launched during the festive season.

The new Maruti Suzuki YFG mid-sized SUV is likely to be powered by a ‘strong hybrid’ petrol engine, which will be sourced from Toyota. The powertrain will comprise of a petrol engine paired to a small battery. It will allow the new mid-sized SUV to run purely on electric power for limited distances. This will help Maruti YFG to return higher fuel efficiency compared to its petrol counterpart.
