New Maruti Swift 2017

With an new design, features and powertrains, the new-generation Maruti Suzuki Swift will be more upmarket than the current model.

After launching some crucial models this year, India’s leading auto maker, Maruti Suzuki is set to launch its flagship hatchback, Swift in an all new avatar early next year. While before that, the company may roll out some facelifts, but the all new Maruti Swift 2017 remains the most awaited model from the company next year. The auto industry is abuzz with Swift getting launched at the 2018 Auto Expo, in February. With its sedan sibling (Dzire) already out for retail, we have a fair idea about the changes and while there is still some time for the all-new Swift to be rolled out officially, its hybrid version was recently spotted in India. This gives us hope that the more fuel-efficient hybrid version could come to India, albeit Maruti Suzuki is yet to reveal plans for adding Swift hybrid to its line-up.

Maruti Swift is not only one of most popular choices in the segment, but it is also among the top-selling models from the company. With this generation leap, the company is eyeing to further strengthen its hold in the segment. That said, the newer models are aesthetically appealing and pack in plethora of tech and connectivity bits. While Swift still enjoys good demand among B segment customers, the car misses out on some features that are now offered on most of the cars.

Maruti has also altered the proportions, as it sits on 20mm longer wheelbase and the new HEARTECT underpinnings make it lighter by around 100kg. With substantial reduction in weight, the new 2017 Swift is expected to be more frugal. Prominent changes will be made to the design and styling of the hatchback for enhanced aesthetics. The new elements not only help transform the look, but also give it a premium touch both on the outside and inside.

Most of the changes have been made to the front as it sports a new hexagonal grille with a thick chrome lining. The headlamps units also boast of a new design, the fog lamps on the revised bumper are new and it also features wider air-dams. The cabin will be better equipped and there will be a stark change in the material quality, fit and finish for a more upmarket look.

There will be no change in terms of engine set up, which means the new Swift 2017 will continue sourcing power from the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine and 1.3-litre DDiS oil burner. Although, these engines will be calibrated for better fuel economy. In terms of power, Maruti’s K-Series petrol engine makes 83bhp against 115Nm torque and the Fiat sourced diesel engine puts out 74bhp with 190Nm. Reports in media suggest that the new Swift could also receive Maruti’s 100.5bhp, 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged Boosterjet engine that currently powers Baleno RS. The five-speed manual gearbox from the current model will be carried over and it could additionally come with an AMT along with a CVT.

With the paradigm shift to SUVs and invent of newer segment, customers have been spoilt for choice. Nevertheless, hatchbacks are still in demand and are unlikely to see a drop, in terms of popularity. Case in point, Swift was first launched in 2005 and despite two generation leaps and several facelifts, it is among the top-selling cars in the segment. The new dose of updates will hopefully further push sales and bring it on par with rivalling models. Check Out – 2017 Maruti Suzuki Swift Photo Gallery

Maruti Suzuki India is known for pricing its cars competitively and we expect despite new changes, the new Swift will carry a lucrative price tag. Additionally, the low maintenance cost and higher fuel economy make Maruti cars a great value for money which works well for them. Following the tradition, Swift will reportedly fall in the affordable price range. In line with the changes made to the car, it is expected to get slightly pricier than the preceding model. Keeping that in mind, expect the new Maruti Swift 2017 price to fall between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 8 lakh. Also Read – Upcoming Maruti Suzuki Cars in India

New Maruti Swift 2017 Launch Date

The new Maruti Swift was earlier expected to break covers during 2017 festive season, albeit new reports suggest Swift is likely to witness a grand launch at the 2018 Auto Expo. One must note that the 14th Auto Expo is slated to begin from February 9 and will last until February 14, 2018. The production of the new Swift 2017 was expected to start from October at company’s Gujrat-based facility, though it seems there is still some time for that.

New Maruti Swift 2017 Mileage

Expected Mileage Expected Mileage
Petrol Model Around 21kmpl
Diesel Model Over 27kmpl

The new Maruti Swift will be built on the all new HEARTECT underpinnings. This platform is also used in other Maruti cars including Baleno and Dzire. As a result, the lightweight underpinnings will scoop out substantial weight from the hatchback, making it more frugal. It will also help deliver better performance and improved handling. With these changes, the new Swift is estimated to return 21km/l in petrol and 27km/l in diesel guise. Read – 2017 Maruti Suzuki Celerio Facelift Coming Soon

New Maruti Swift 2017 Specifications

Engine 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder VVT Petrol
Maximum Power 83bhp @ 6,000rpm
Maximum Torque 115Nm @ 4,000rpm
Engine 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder DDiS Diesel
Maximum Power 74bhp @ 4,000rpm
Maximum Torque 190Nm @ 2,000rpm
Transmission 5-speed Manual & CVT

The new Swift 2017 will source power from the same petrol and diesel engines used in the current model. Maruti’s 12-litre, K-Series petrol unit will power the petrol Swift and the Fiat sourced 1.3-litre DDiS oil burner will power the diesel version. Both the engines are said to be calibrated for improved fuel economy and performance.

In terms of power, the K-Series petrol engine makes 83bhp at 6,000rpm against peak torque of 115Nm at 4,000rpm. Generating slightly less power than its petrol counterpart, the 1.3-litre oil burner puts out 74bhp at 4,000rpm and 190Nm of torque at 2,000rpm. The five-speed conventional gearbox form the existing model will be retained and there could be an additional AMT unit along with a CVT.

Rumours are rife that Maruti Suzuki India could add the 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine to the new Swift line-up. One must note that this engine debuted in India with Baleno RS and makes 100.5bhp along with 150Nm of torque. Amid rumours of hybrid version likely to be launched in India, reports of global Swift Sport coming to the domestic market have started doing the rounds. Powered by Suzuki’s 1.4-litre Boosterjet engine, it makes maximum power of 138bhp.

While India is yet to receive the all new Swift, it is already available for retail overseas. The global Swift carries a K12C 1.2-litre Dualjet, 4-cylinder and K0C 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbocharged petrol engines. These units get a choice between a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed automatic and a CVT. The hybrid Swift on the other hand, derives power from a 90bhp, 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine that works in conjunction with a 10kW Motor Generator. For transmitting power, it uses a 5-speed AGS.

View from side will remain largely same with most of the elements carried over from the previous model. What may change is the newly designed diamond cut alloy wheels, new outside rear view mirrors with integrated blinkers and a floating roofline. Besides, Maruti will use KUV100 inspired door handles on the rear side.

Rear Profile

In line with the front profile, the rear side of the hatchback will also witness multiple changes. The most prominent of all will be the new wrap-around taillamps that will a far cry from the previous sharp units. The lid will be flatter and the windscreen will be shorter. It will also get a larger bumper at the back and an integrated roof spoiler for a sportier look.

Maruti cars usually come with multiple storage points and this one in no exception. It is expected that the new Swift will come with 370-litres of boot space, which is substantially more than the current model with 316-litres of capacity. Maruti will equip split rear seats which could be folded to make more space at the back.

New Maruti Swift 2017 Performance

The new Swift will get a new platform, although the engine line-up will remain unchanged. With the same 1.2-litre K-Series petrol and 1.3-litre, DDiS unit on the carline, we expect no change in the performance. New Maruti Swift 2017 Safety & Braking

The third-generation of Swift will receive plethora of new features, including a host of safety equipment. It will get primary tech such as the front airbags for driver and co-passenger, anti-lock-braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution and reverse camera. New Maruti Swift 2017 Competition

Maruti Swift has ruled the B segment from the time of its introduction in 2005. The flagship model from India’s leading carmaker is set to leap into the third generation early next year with radically changed exterior and interior. With a more upmarket cabin, increase mileage and better kitted cabin, the new Swift will be more desirable than before. While in the segment, it will gun straight against the likes of Hyundai Grand i10, new-gen Ford Figo and Volkswagen Polo.

Should You Buy It?

Swift is one of the most spotted models in India. Coming from the stables of Maruti, the car has likability among customers thanks to its sporty looks, frugal engines and low maintenance cost. With the new changes on the hatchback, it is set to get more appealing in visual terms. The cabin will be more spacious and will pack new kit. Besides, the car is likely to be more frugal than the current model and there could be a sportier RS version that will sit at the top of the range. While the pricing will be revealed later, the new Swift will comprehensive updates will be more desirable than before.
