Maruti Suzuki’s 1st Electric Car To Cost Above Rs 10 Lakh – More Details

Maruti Suzuki, the Indo-Japanese automaker, plans to foray into the electric vehicle space in 2025. Speaking to an online media publication, Hisahi Takeuchi, Maruti Suzuki CEO, said that it’s difficult to price the company’s first EV model under Rs 10 lakh due to high cost of EV technology and battery. He believes that their prices won’t “come down enough in the next three years”. Bringing in an affordable EV (under Rs 10 lakh) will only be possible with the small capacity battery that offers short range (around 150km).

Takeuchi further said that EVs with smaller batteries will require a wide network of fast charging stations, which is possibly a bigger challenge. Maruti Suzuki has “a very conservative approach to EV technology”. Though, its upcoming electric vehicle has been on test long enough that will meet customer’s requirements and adapt to Indian weather condition.

If reports are to be believed, Maruti Suzuki’s first EV will be a mid-size SUV measuring around 4.2 metres in length. The Indo-Japanese automaker might showcase its first electric car in its concept avatar at the 2023 Auto Expo. The model will be developed under Suzuki-Toyota’s partnership underpinning Toyota’s low-cost DNGA modular platform. One must note that architecture is heavily localized and support electric powertrains.

The first Maruti electric car will come with two battery options – 48kWh (138bhp) and 59kWh (170bhp) – offering range between 400km and 500km respectively. It could be offered with AWD system. The company will first bring in ICE (internal combustion engine) version of its electric SUV during 2022 Diwali season. We have reported earlier that the new electric cars developed under Suzuki and Toyota partnership will be produced at Maruti Suzuki’s Ahmedabad based facility in Gujarat.
